Book Review: Whiskey Beach
This month's book club book was "Whiskey Beach", by Nora Roberts. If you would like to purchase it, you can find it here on Amazon. Otherwise, you can continue reading to find out what I thought of the book in the mean time.
This was a very slow read for me. I can honestly say I am an above average reader. You all know I really enjoy reading. I will regularly read a book in a day. "Whiskey Beach" felt like it was never ending. I just finished it last night at midnight, a mere 19 hours before book club. I most likely would not have stuck in there and read the whole book, if I didn't want the shame of going to book club without finishing the book!
I do not have anything against Nora. I have read a few of her books without issue. Even have found a few of her books very enjoyable. This was not a winner for me though.
"Whiskey Beach" is sort of a murder mystery, but also focuses on the main character putting his life back together. He is staying at a family house (mansion) after his grandma fell and got hurt. He is also doing a little running from his past as he is a suspect in the murder of his ex wife. Some odd things start to happen, and they believe someone is after a mythical family treasure.
The middle of the book is kind of too love scene heavy for my liking. I feel like a lot of the book was just very average, every day stuff, which isn't too interesting to read. I'm sure she wanted to symbolize his slow recovery, but I think Nora does that a little too well. There are a lot of stereotypical characters (the over protective man, the meek girl with a shady past, the small down nosy neighbors).
The last two, out of thirty, chapters is when I felt it picked up and became more interesting. Thank goodness, since I was super tired while trying to finish the book. I won't give away anything in those two chapters, because well that is the best material of the book.
I rated "Whiskey Beach" 3 out of 5 on Amazon. It wasn't awful, but will definitely be banished to the archive to never return.
