My sincere apologies! It has been over a month since I have written a book review. Between my really weird summer work schedule and the longer period between book club, I just haven't been reading as much. I am making up for it now that I'm back to my full time job! I am currently 30% through World War Z, and have finished Inferno.
Inferno is the book club book for August. World War Z was recommended by a friend. I generally always write up the review before starting a new book. However, I don't like to post a review until after book club. I know a few people from book club read my blog. Why should they be forced to hear my thoughts on a book twice? The meeting is tomorrow night, well was tonight by the time you are reading this, but I'm writing this now. It will be scheduled to post sometime during the book club meeting.
I want to start by saying I have not read any Dan Brown before. Just like the past few months of book club, this is a book I would not have chosen for myself. I saw the movie Davinci's Code, but did not read the book. I got the idea that the books would be drowned in religious ideals. I wasn't sure how well the idea of the scavenger hunt would translate in writing.
The answer was fantastically well. I could not set this book down. The mystery started out in the first page of the book. The reader starts in such a confusing situation that you can't help but read a good portion of the book the first night to try to figure out what is going on!
Inferno includes Robert Langdon, from Brown's other books. Since, I have seen the first movie. I couldn't help but picture Tom Hanks while reading the book. That didn't bother me at all. I just wanted to find out what on earth was going on and what was going to end up happening!
This book includes a few of my favorite topics. Purposely released plagues, overpopulation, and crazy people who feel the need to make decisions for the world. I have read a few books with this same premise. I am always drawn in deep. Maybe because it is a scary thing to think about. What is the Earth's capacity? Should we be doing something to stop the overly rapid reproducing? Those are not topics I will go into tonight, or ever, on my blog!
We follow the twisted pathway of Dante's Inferno in this book through Europe and beyond. The urgent feeling carries from beginning to end. I felt stressed a few times while reading this book. Don't let this scare you off. I'm a weirdo. I really get into my reading. The last time I read about a population controlling disease, I jumped any time I heard someone cough/sneeze in public.
There are a few twists in Inferno that caused me to go back and reread chapters. Good thing the chapters were short. Another plus, since I pretty much can't stop reading in the middle of a chapter. I, at a few times, had my kindle in one hand and iphone in the other. Both, in various chapters of the book to compare information. Brown is a very clever author!
The ending... ah, the ending. I loved it. It was just the right twist. It made me think. It made me discuss with Mike. Who, while is an innocent bystander, had to be subjected to my explaining the book and then asking what he thought.
I gave this book a 5 out of 5. It is really new, so sorry for the vague review, but go read it! Once you have read it, contact me! Let's talk about the ending!
Back to my zombies.
